Chapter 3 of 23
Jacob, Esau, and Edom

In plain language
The Bible says Edom will be "small and greatly despised," and in one verse God says "Esau have I hated." The speaker claims Jews are the most hated people, so they must be Edom. But these verses talk about the ancient nation of Edom, and they treat Edom and Israel as two different peoples. The Bible also gives Jacob (Israel) the same blessing of "the fatness of the earth" that the speaker says marks Esau.
The claim
The opponent may argue that prophecies describing Edom as despised, plus Edom's hostility toward Judah, identify modern Jews as Edomites.
Sources cited
Genesis 25:23; Malachi 1:2–3; Obadiah; Psalm 137:7. These texts discuss biblical peoples and ancient conflicts.
Key facts
The texts distinguish Jacob/Israel from Esau/Edom; none identifies later Jewish communities as Edomites. Being persecuted cannot establish ancestry.
