Chapter 7 of 23

Talmud quotations

Illustration: open book
In plain language
The speaker reads short, shocking lines from the Talmud. The Talmud is thousands of pages of rabbis arguing about law, recorded about 1,500 years ago. Some lines do sound harsh today, as many ancient law books do. But the speaker leaves out the context and leaves out other passages, such as one forbidding fathers to marry off young daughters and one requiring Jews to help poor and sick non-Jews.
The claim
Expect decontextualized quotations from Sanhedrin, Niddah, Bava Metzia, or Avodah Zarah to be presented as proof that Jews are taught to harm non-Jews.
Sources cited
The transcript repeats claims about child abuse, gentiles as animals, and refusing rescue; such quote lists circulated in older polemical literature.
Key facts
Demand the original language, surrounding discussion, legal status, and a reliable edition. A technical debate or one passage is not automatically contemporary Jewish practice or doctrine.
